Choose bags, bulk bags or loose deliveryUse the assessment below — the right option depends on total volume and site access.
Prepare the siteClear debris, loosen compacted subsoil, and check the area drains reasonably well.
Order with access confirmedTell your supplier about site access if you're having a bulk bag or loose load delivered.
Spread and levelRake to an even depth, firming gently as you go without over-compacting.
Allow it to settleWater in and let the soil settle for a few weeks before planting or turfing where possible.
What Is Topsoil?
Topsoil is the nutrient-rich upper layer of ground where most plant roots and biological activity are concentrated, usually the top 15–30cm in undisturbed soil. It's sold separately from subsoil (the denser, less fertile layer used mainly to build up levels) and from compost (organic matter added to improve structure, not a bulk-fill substitute). Suppliers grade topsoil against BS 3882:2015, the current British Standard for topsoil quality.
How Much Topsoil Do I Need?
Volume is length × width × depth for a rectangular area, or π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth for a circular one, always converted to metres first. This calculator does the arithmetic for you and adds a settlement allowance, since freshly delivered topsoil contains air pockets and will compact after rain, watering and foot traffic — ordering the raw geometric volume alone commonly leaves you short.
UK Topsoil Depth Guide
Depth needs vary a lot by project. Lawn top-dressing needs only around 5cm, while new turf or seeding is usually laid over about 10cm of topsoil on prepared subsoil. Borders and flower beds typically use around 30cm, matching BS 3882's guidance that an individual topsoil layer should not normally exceed 300mm. Raised beds for vegetables generally need 30–45cm depending on what you're growing, and trees or shrubs benefit from 60cm or more of rooting depth, often combining a topsoil layer with loosened subsoil beneath it.
Bagged vs Bulk Bag vs Loose Delivery
Small jobs — a few pots, a small patch, or under about 0.3m³ — are usually cheapest and easiest to handle as 60L multipurpose bags from a garden centre. Medium projects, roughly 0.3–3m³, are typically best served by one or more bulk bags delivered to your driveway, since they need no special access beyond space to unload. Larger projects, several cubic metres or more, are usually most cost-effective as a loose (uncontainered) load delivered by tipper lorry — but this needs vehicle access to tip directly where you want it, or a hard surface you're happy to have covered temporarily.
Common Mistakes When Ordering Topsoil
The most common mistake is ordering the exact calculated volume with no settlement allowance, then running short once the soil beds in. Others include assuming every "bulk bag" is the same size (they range roughly 0.6–0.8m³ between suppliers), using a generic density figure when the supplier's own topsoil is notably lighter or heavier, and not checking delivery access before ordering a bulk bag or loose load that a lorry can't actually reach.
Preparing Your Site & Leftover Soil
Before topsoil arrives, clear debris and vegetation, loosen compacted ground so roots can penetrate beneath the new layer, and check the area doesn't pool water after rain. If your project also involves digging out and removing soil (rather than adding it), be aware that moving significant quantities of soil — even within your own property — can be classed as a waste activity requiring an exemption from the Environment Agency; GOV.UK's waste-on-land guidance (see Sources) covers when this applies.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how much topsoil I need?
Measure the length and width of the area in metres, decide on a depth in centimetres, and multiply length × width × depth (converted to metres) to get cubic metres. This calculator does that automatically and also converts the result into tonnes, bulk bags and small bags.
How many tonnes is 1m³ of topsoil?
Roughly 1.3 to 1.7 tonnes, depending on how moist and compacted the soil is. A commonly used trade average is 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre, which is the default this calculator uses — adjust it if your supplier quotes a different figure.
How much does a bulk bag of topsoil cover?
It depends on the bag size and how deep you're spreading. A typical 0.8m³ bulk bag covers about 8m² at 10cm depth, or roughly 2.7m² at 30cm depth. Bulk bags range from around 0.6m³ to 0.8m³ depending on the supplier, so always check the exact size.
How much topsoil do I need for a raised bed?
For most vegetables, aim for at least 30–45cm of topsoil depth. A 2m × 1m bed at 45cm needs roughly 0.9m³ before settlement allowance. Shallow-rooted crops like salad leaves and strawberries can manage with around 30cm.
What depth of topsoil do I need for a new lawn?
For seeding or turfing over reasonable existing ground, 10cm of topsoil over loosened subsoil is a common minimum. On poor or compacted ground, more depth and proper subsoil preparation will give better long-term results.
Should I add extra topsoil for settlement?
Yes — freshly delivered topsoil contains air pockets and will compact after rain, watering and foot traffic. A 10% allowance is a widely used starting point; heavier, wetter soil or a very uneven base may need 15–20% extra.
What's the difference between topsoil, subsoil and compost?
Topsoil is the nutrient-rich upper layer where most plant roots and biological activity are concentrated. Subsoil sits beneath it, is denser and less fertile, and is used to build up levels rather than to grow in directly. Compost is organic matter added to either to improve structure and nutrients — it is not a substitute for bulk topsoil volume.
How much is a bulk bag of topsoil in litres?
A 0.8m³ bulk bag holds 800 litres; a 0.6m³ bag holds 600 litres. Always check your supplier's stated bag volume, since "bulk bag" is a generic term for a large woven tote rather than a fixed UK size.
Is it cheaper to buy topsoil in bulk bags or loose (bulk delivery)?
For small projects (under roughly 1m³) bagged or a single bulk bag is usually more practical. For larger projects, loose bulk delivery by tipper lorry is typically the most cost-effective option per cubic metre, though it needs vehicle access and space to tip the load.
Can I mix my own topsoil with compost?
Yes, many gardeners blend topsoil with compost or well-rotted manure (often around 25–50% by volume) to improve fertility and structure, particularly for raised beds and containers. Calculate the topsoil portion first, then add your chosen proportion of compost on top.
How do I calculate topsoil for a circular flower bed?
Use the circular shape option and enter the diameter. The calculator applies π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth to get the volume in cubic metres, the same principle as the rectangular calculation but for a round area.
What's the British Standard for topsoil quality?
BS 3882:2015 is the current British Standard specification for topsoil in the UK. It covers grading and quality, including that individual topsoil layers should not normally exceed 300mm, topped up with loosened subsoil to reach a minimum rooting depth of 450mm for grass or 600mm for other planting.
How long does topsoil take to settle?
Freshly laid topsoil typically settles noticeably within the first few weeks, especially after rain or watering, and continues to consolidate gradually over several months. This is why ordering slightly more than the raw calculated volume is standard practice.
Do I need topsoil or can I just use compost?
For anything beyond a small container, pure compost is usually too rich, too free-draining and too expensive to use as bulk fill. Topsoil provides the structural bulk and mineral content plants need, with compost mixed in as an enrichment rather than the main volume.
How much topsoil do I need per square metre?
That depends entirely on depth: at 10cm depth you need 0.1m³ per m², at 30cm depth you need 0.3m³ per m², and at 45cm depth you need 0.45m³ per m². Multiply your area in m² by your chosen depth in metres to get cubic metres.
