If you are running a rotational or mob-grazing system for cattle or sheep, "how big should this paddock be?" is a question you answer every few days, not once. Get the paddock too small and animals run out of grass before you planned to move them; too large and you waste grass that then goes to seed before the next pass. This calculator works out paddock size from your group's daily dry matter (DM) demand and AHDB's published pre-grazing cover and residual targets, checked 2026-08-10, rather than a flat area-per-animal rule of thumb. For scale, DEFRA's 2024 farm statistics put the average English farm at 87 hectares - a single grazing paddock is usually a small slice of that, moved and re-measured many times a season. How Much Grass Does Your Herd Or Flock Actually Need?

Dry matter intake is normally expressed as a percentage of liveweight. AHDB's cattle grazing guidance (checked 2026-08-10) allocates 2.5% of liveweight per day to cows and 3% to calves and growing cattle - its own worked example gives a 750kg cow an intake of about 18.5 kg DM/day, and a 35-cow bulling group a combined demand of around 648 kg DM/day. This calculator uses the same 2.5%/3% split for its cattle presets (a 700kg suckler cow defaults to 17.5 kg DM/day; a 350kg grower to 10.5 kg DM/day), and applies the 3% growing-stock rate to dairy cows at grass as a deliberately cautious approximation, since a high-yielding dairy cow on good pasture can eat more than that. Does this account for drought, waterlogging, or poaching?

No. The calculator works from the cover and residual figures you enter; it does not adjust for weather risk, ground damage from stock traffic in wet conditions, or drought-stressed grass that may look present but has little feed value. Should I use hectares or acres?

Either - the calculator shows both, and the optional existing-paddock field accepts whichever unit you prefer. 1 hectare = 2.47105 acres. UK land is measured in hectares in most official agricultural guidance (including AHDB's), but many smaller holdings and rural listings still use acres.

Does this work for mob grazing (very high stock density, very short moves)?

Yes - the same demand-divided-by-grazable-dry-matter formula applies whether the occupation period is half a day or a week; just set the Occupation Period input to whatever your system actually uses. Very short, very high-density mob grazing typically also uses a higher target residual than the 1,500 kg DM/ha default, so adjust that input if your system specifies one.

How often should I re-measure pasture cover?

Because UK grass growth rate itself changes through the season - roughly a 4-to-1 swing between March and the May/June peak - a cover reading and paddock size that were right three weeks ago may no longer be right. Most rotational grazers re-walk and re-measure cover weekly, or before every paddock move if growth is changing quickly.

Can I use this for dairy cows?
